An individual profited close to $500,000 on the ouster of Venezuela's president immediately preceding it was publicly declared, sparking debate about the possibility of profiting from non-public details of the US operation.

Changing Odds in Wagers

Bets placed on the crypto-platform, a crypto-powered platform, that the leader would be out of power by the end of January rose in the time leading up to President Donald Trump announced on Saturday that the Venezuelan leader had been seized.

A particular user, which joined the platform last month and took four positions, all on the Venezuelan situation, earned over $nearly half a million from a starting bet of over $32,000.

The identity is unknown. This unidentified trader had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.

Market Signals Before News Break

Platform data shows that participants put the odds of Maduro's exit at just under 7% in the afternoon of Friday, January 2nd.

But the market's assessment had jumped to over 10% by late Friday night and surged in the morning of the next day, suggesting a sudden change in market sentiment right before the social media post was made.

"This particular bet has all the characteristics of a trade based on confidential knowledge," said a financial reform advocate.

A small number of other platform users also earned significant sums from predicting the capture.

Political Attention Emerges

Politicians are starting to take note.

A bill put forward on Monday aims to prohibit government employees from participating on forecasting platforms if they have "confidential government knowledge" related to a wager.

The Prediction Market Landscape

Prediction markets have become increasingly popular in the past few years, with traders able to wager on everything from elections to politics.

This sector encountered regulatory challenges under the last presidential term. However it has experienced less resistance during the Trump presidency.

Using confidential knowledge is against the law in the stock market, but there are less oversight in the prediction market space.

A company executive for another major platform said their site "strictly forbids insider trading of any form."
